REV. EDWARD D. BYRD

A well known southeast Iowa minister, the Rev. Edward D. Byrd, 70, of Montrose died Saturday, May 17, at 2:05 a.m. in Graham hospital, Keokuk. Death was sudden. He had been in the hospital five hours.

He was born Feb. 7, 1899 at Savannah, Ga. and spent his childhood in St. Louis, Mo. and she survives.

He married Clara Graf on July 6, 1925 at St. Louis, Mo. and she survives.

The Rev. Mr. Byrd preached since 1924 and was ordained in the Presbyterian church in May 1927 in Jasper, Ind. He served in churches in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa and served in the larger parish in this area for eight and one-half years returning to the two churches at Montrose and Aryle in March of 1966.

He was a member of the Joppa lodge, Montrose chapter, the Commandery at Keokuk, the Consistory and Shrine at Cedar Rapids. He served in W.W.I and was a member of the American Legion at Cedar Rapids.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Rev. Edward Byrd of New Carlisle, Ind., and James Byrd with the U.S. Navy stationed at Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Fisher of Johnson, Vermont and Mrs. Virginia Callahan of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Donald Byrd of Chicago, Ill. and 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward and Carrie Taylor Byrd, and two sons in infancy.

A Masonic service was held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Miller's Home for Funerals in Donnellson. The funeral service was held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Argyle Presbyterian church with the Rev. N. Grier Hills of Athens, Ill. officiating.
