Mrs. Wilamina Shirk

Mrs. Wilamina Shirk, 90, died early Wednesday morning, April 16 at the Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua where she had been hospitalized since March 29 when she fractured a hip in a fall at her home.

The daughter of August and Albertina Johnson, she was born Sept. 25, 1878 at Ottumwa. On Sept. 8, 1904 she was married to Daniel M. Shirk at Ottumwa. He preceded her in death in 1961. Most of her life was spent farming near Birmingham. They retired to Douds in 1947.

Mrs. Shirk was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and its Women's Society of Christian Service. She had taught Sunday School for a period of 50 years in the various churches which she attended. She will be remembered as a loyal Christian worker, who did her best to live her faith daily.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Plowman of Douds and Mrs. Lucille Pieper of Iowa City; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a sister, Eunice Johnson of Swedesburg.

Four sisters and a brother also preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 18 at 2 p.m. at the Christ United Methodist Church with the pastor, Rev. Dennis Nicholson, officiating. Mrs. Garold Hughes was the organist. Mrs. Keith A. Smith and Mrs. Robert Pedrick were vocalists. Nephews served as pall bearers. Interment was in the Leando Cemetery, with arrangements in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home.
