Joseph E. Baird

Joseph Edward Baird, 73,108 S. Gunnison, a retired Burlington police chief, died at 7:10 p.m., Friday, Dec. 27, in Mercy hospital in Burlington.

He had been in failing health for several years.

He was born Feb. 25, 1895, in Burlington, the son of harry and Nellie Gerke Baird. On Nov. 4, 1929, at Monmouth, Ill., he married Gladys Gurnee.

He served with the Burlington police department for 24 years before his retirement in 1945. Following his retirement he and Mrs. Baird moved to an acreage south of Bonaparte where they lived until recently when they returned to Burlington. Mrs. Baird was employed for several years in the Troutman Super Market at Bonaparte.

He was of the Methodist faith and a member of the Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Policemen's Benefit Association.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Phyllis) Waldorf, Burlington and Mrs. Gloria Schilling, Dubuque; one son, Robert, New Brunswick, N.J. There are eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in Prugh's Chapel, Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 21 at 2:00 o'clock. Dr. G. Dempster Yinger will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
