OBITUARIES

MRS. OTIS C. NEWBOLD

Funeral services for Mrs. Otis C. (Jessie Ruth) Newbold, 94, of Hillsboro, who passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 6 at Kennedy Nursing Home, Mt. Pleasant, where she had been a patient the past year, were held at the Hillsboro Baptist Church, Tuesday, Feb. 8, 1966, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. David Diercks officiating.

Music was provided by Mrs. Vinton Hoaglin, oragnist(err), and Mrs. Forest Fuhrer, soloist.

Bearers were Burch Boley, M.M. Doan, Jr., Forest Fuhrer, Stan Howard, Craig Smart and Cleo Taeger.

Interment was in the Hillsboro Cemetery with Beatty Funeral Chapel, Salem, in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Ruth Hixson, daughter of James and Martha Mendenhall Hixson was born Nov. 17, 1871 in Van Buren County near Hillsboro. She was one of 12 children. With the exception of two years, her entire life was spent in this community, 68 years on a farm west of town.

On Oct. 30, 1889, she was united in marriage with Caleb Newbold, son of Rev. Joshua Newbold, who was the founder of the Hillsboro Baptist Church and was it's first minister. To this union were born three children, Bessie, Glenn and Park. Mr. Newbold died Feb. 7, 1899.

On Jan. 1, 1901, she married Otis C. Newbold and to this union one son, Roland was born.

Mrs. Newbold was a member of the Hillsboro Baptist Church, a charter member of the Hillsboro O.E.S. and the last charter member of the Hillsboro Missionary Society.

She was preceded in by her husband, Otis C.; son Glenn and daughter-in-law, Jessie Emma.

Survivors are her daughter, Mrs. R.E. Davidson of Davenport; two sons, Park L. of Cedar Rapids and Roland of Huntington Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Dora Connar and a brother, Harley Hixson.
