Martha J. Hanan was born in Van Buren county, Iowa, Aug. 5, 1844, and died at Vernon in the same county, January 7, 1908, age 63 years, 5 months and 2 days. On February 13, 1862, she was united in marriage to Edward DeHart, who died Dec. 2, 1879. To this union were born five children, four sons and one daughter: Harvey L., of Reno, Nev.; Marion H., Bentonsport; Mary A. Newman, Ft. Collins, Colo.; John E., Guymon, Okla.; Bee W., San Francisco, Cal. The deceased is survived by her aged mother, two brothers, one sister and a large number of other relatives.

She was converted in the winter of 1880 at Vernon and united with the M.E. Church. Mrs. DeHart was known to many Van Buren Cty. people, her residence, with the exception of a few years in the west, being continuous in the county.

She was a woman of considerable energy, self-reliant, decided in her preferences, always ready to help in time of need. Espcially was she ready to respond in case of sickness. Her last days of active work were spent in caring for the sick ones, being engaged in that service when her own fatal sickness came. Her memory will be cherished by her children and by many others to whom she had at some time or other ministered, "Inasmuch as ye did it unto one of the least of these, ye did it unto me." She will be missed and mourned by a large acquaintance of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church at Bentonsport, January 12, conducted by the Rev. Geo. Blagg, and the body was laid beside that of her husband in Vernon cemetery.
