James R. Burkett, 84 retired farmer, died at about 8 a.m. on Feb. 18, 1967 at the Van buren County Memorial Hospital. He had been ill since November.

He was born Aug. 13, 1882 in Logan County, Ill., the son of Michael I. and Anna Long Burkett. They moved to Van Buren County in 1893. He married Lelah Murphy on Nov. 29, 1905. She died on April 22, 1939. He was a member of the Christian Church.

Survivors include one son, Fred, and one daughter, Mrs. Evelyn (Willard) Carruthers, both of Keosauqua; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grand children.

Services are tentatively set for Monday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Fellows Cemetery. Catcott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
