Miss Rachel Thomas was born in Switzerland county, Indiana, Sept. 24, 1826 and died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Cora Murphy in Fort Madison, Iowa August 7, 1909, aged 82 years, 10 months and 17 days. She was married to William Gaston Sept. 20, 1845, who preceded her 13 years to the spriti world. Her home had been in Van Buren County for nearly 75 years. She was the mother of 11 children, seven of whom are living, James Gaston of Mt. Sterling, Iowa; George W., Chares W., W.O., Mrs. Anna Gaston and Mrs. Cora Murphy of Ft. Madison. She was the grandmother of 26 grandchildren, and the greawt grandmother of 16 great-grandchildren and greawt-great-grandmother of one great-great-grandchild. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Mary Lee of Sterling, Ill., aged 90 years, and Mrs. lizzie Thomas of Hillsboro, Iowa, aged 85 years, the latter attending her funeral. At the age of 15 years she became a member of the Methodist church, which relation she continued until her death. She adorned her profession of faith in Christ during her life by many acts of kindness. The remains were laid to rest in the Vernon Cemetery by the side of her husband to await the morning of the resurrection day. May her children strive to meet her in heaven.
