Meribah Whealdon Fowler, daughter of Nathan Whealdon and Ann Knight Whealdon was born April 20, 1826 in Harrison County, Ohio, and died at her home in Van Buren County, Iowa, February 18, 1924 in her 98th year. She was a Birthright member of the Society of Friends. A life spanning nearly a century covers much history. Almost three generations came and went under her observation. In early life she was a school teacher, having taught her firt term 80 years ago. In the year 1852 she married Lewis Fowler. They moved to Iowa in 1865 at the close of the Civil War. To this union were born eight children, two daughters dying in infancy and the husband and father in 1886. She is survived by six children--Mrs. Nancy Mize, Lewis W. Fowler, Van Buren County; Mrs. Rebecca Sevier, Pittsburg, Pa.; Miss Meribah Fowler, Denver, Colo., Silas S. Fowler, Keosauqua; Mrs. Wilda Huffaker, Denver, and also fourteen grand children and six greawt-grandchildren.
Her life was simple and sincere. Her tastes included love of family, friends and books. Sympathy with mankind and understanding of the faults and virtues of all were often aptly expressed by her quotation from favorite authors. Poetry charmed and held her. At an early age she had committed to memory much of Homer's Illiad. Her favorite was the Quaker poet, Whittier.
"We will be patient, and assuage the feeling
We cannot wholly stay;
By silence sanctifying, not concealing
The grief that must have sway."We thank our neighbors for their kind aid and sympathy; and the Ladies' Aid of Center Chapel, and the Prairie Queen Local for flowers, during our recent bereavement. Mrs. Rebecca Sevier, L.W. Fowler and family.
