MEMORIAL SERVICES HELD FOR JENNIE GILBERT

Memorial services for Mrs. Jennie Cook Gilbert were held at the United Methodist church Sunday afternoon.

Mrs. Gilbert, a resident of Keosauqua for years until moving to Wesley Acres in Des Moines in 1955, died at the age of 100 on March 1, 1973. She had willed her body to medical science.

The Rev. James M. Ford conducted the memorial services, with vocal music by Keith Gaston, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Strait. They were accompanied by Mrs. Herman Green, organist.

Mrs. Gilbert was born in Ellisville, Ill., and as a .... with her family to Kansas. At the age of 17 she started teaching school and continued for six years.

During this period she met Hiram F. Gilbert, also a teacher, and on July 8, 1896 they were married. Mrs. Gilbert was interested in becoming a Methodist minister, so they moved to Iowa near Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant where he could attend classes. He later served several churches in the county as pastor.

The couple had four children. Sons Glyde and Lawrence died in childhood and are buried with their father in a Bloomfield cemetery. Their daughters, Mrs. Esther Arthman of Rockville, Md. and Mrs. Helen Burton of Des Moines attended the memorial service here Sunday. There are four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
