Ray Cox was born Jan. 26, 1877 at the Center Chapel neighborhood, southeast of Keosauqua. He passed away at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 1960 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emery Gire in Fairfield at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 11 days. He had been in failing health the past year and suffered a stroke on Monday.
He spent his entire life in the Keosauqua Center Chapel community and was a long time member of the Center Chapel Church. He was from a large family having six sisters: Rena Sechrist, Ada Baird, Carrie Murphy, Elva Bartholomew, Tensa Blackburn and Sadie Magorian, and four brothers, Orin, Chloe, Ed, and Harvey.
On Nov. 3, 1906, he was married to Jennie E. Cochran. To this union were born one son Willard and one daughter, Cecil. His wife preceded him in death in February, 1945 and his son in December 1957. Also preceding him in death were four sisters and two brothers.
His is survived by his daughter; his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Florabelle Cox; 18 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; two sisters Mrs. Ada Baird, Kenroy, MO and Mrs. Carrie Murphy of Pulaski; two brothers, Orin Cox of Batavia and A. Chloe Cox of Cedar Rapids; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 1960 at the Center Chapel Methodist church with the pastor, Rev. E.S. Tschetter officiating. Interment was in the Center Chapel cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers: Willis Beer, Hugh Matheson, Alva Hoskin, Ed Warren, M.W. Flowler, Robert Dorothy, Linn Beatty, William Biship, Harry McIntosh. Pallbearers: Richard Aylor, Raymond Hemm, Stanley Beer, Fuller Bartholomew, Roy Watkins, Lester Matheson.
