Rupert R. Hughes

Rupert Roger Hughes, 65, of Keosauqua, died at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital, where he had been since Jan. 1. He had been in failing health.

He was born June 25, 1907, at Bonaparte to John Wesley and Martha Ann Van Hyning Hughes. He married Marie Whitcanack Oct. 23, 1930 in Fairfield.

He is survived by his wife; six sons, Jack of Greenville, Ohio, Allen of Keosauqua, Howard and Danny of Astor, Fla., Rodney of German, Pa., Roger at home; six daughters, Mrs. Maxine Smith of Cantril, Joanne Bishop of Keosauqua, Beverly Latimer of Carbondale, Pa., Evelyn Huffman of Batavia, Phyllis Bickerstaff of Hopedale, Ohio, Sandra Redden of Donnellson; six brothers, Russell of Titusville, Fla., Roscoe of Keosauqua, Reginald of Los Gatos, Calif., Robert of Sacramento, Calif., Raymond of Boulder, Colo., Rex of Des Moines; five sisters, Lela Holmes of Bonaparte, Lola Austin of Titusville, Fla., Lula Beggs and Lenora Peacock of Keosauqua, Louise Wolfe of Burlington; 22 grandchildren. A brother, Ray, preceded him in death.

Private services were held at the Catcott Funeral Home at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, with the Rev. James M. Ford officiating. Burial was in Lebanon Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua.
