John A. Vandenberg

John Albert Vandenberg, 73, former manager of the Henry County Home and a longtime member of Masonic Order, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Henry County Memorial Hospital in Mount Pleasant.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant with Dr. Carl Wilson officiating. Burial was in Forest Home Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of the Weir-Cookes Funeral Home.

Masonic services were conducted at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

In addition to managing the Henry County Home, Vandenberg also held similar positions in Van Buren and Des Moines Counties. He held a record of 30 years continuous attendance in Sunday school at the Methodist Church in Keosauqua.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 8 A.F. & A.M. at Mount Pleasant, and he had held a great many high offices past High Priest. He had also served as Rainbow Dad in Keosauqua.

John Albert Vandenberg was born June 26, 1899, in Chicago, the son of Burtell and Kathrine Maddron Vandenberg. His marriage to Emily Macil Young took place in Mount Pleasant Jan. 19, 1922.

In addition to his widow, Vandenberg is survived by three sons, Robert D. of Minneapolis, Minn., John Raymond of Burlington, and Richard J. of Hudson; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; also one brother, Lewis J. Vandenberg of Burlington; and a sister, Mrs. Arlo Schultz of Doddsville.

He was preceded in death by one brother.
