Earl W. Brown

Earl Wesley Brown, son of John and Clara Porter Brown, was born August 22, 1899, in Kentucky and departed this life Tuesday, November 16, 1971, at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 72.

As a young man he lived in several southern states. On December 23, 1941, he was married to Alice Daniels at Kansas City, Missouri, where he was associated with the Grennan Baking Co.

They moved to their home near Douds in 1947. Earl was in the insurance business, and for a number of years operated the D-X service station in Douds, in addition to farming.

Remaining to cherish his memory are his widow, Alice, their daughter, Kathleen, a student in nursing at Iowa Tech school in Ottumwa, three brothers, Gurvan and O.K. Brown, both of Alliance, Ohio, and Gene Brown of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, two sisters, Mrs. LaVelle Rockhill of Alliance, Ohio, and Mrs. Elsie Starr of Memphis, Tennessee, other relatives and many friends.

He was a member, and currently serving as Chairman of the Administrative Board of Christ United Methodist Church, and was a member of Celestial Lodge N. 413, Ancient Fred and Accepted Masons, the Douds Community Club, the Douds Field Day Association, and for many years was active in the Douds Fire Department.

Earl will be remembered as a devoted husband and father and a good citizen, faithful to his Church, and one who did his part to make his community a better place in which to live.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 19, 1971, at 2 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, with pastor, the Rev. Gerald Caughron, officiating. Vocalists were Jon Finney, Raymond Finney, Merlin Harrryman, and Robert Stinson. Mrs. Charley Kunzman was the organist. Pall bearers were Doyle Strang, Morris Finney, Davis Pollock, Wallace Benge, Cyrus Greenfield, and Keith A. Smith. Interment was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery near Douds. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home.
