Daniel Murphy died at his home in Keosauqua Monday, November 12, 1900 and was buried the following day in the Purdom cemetery. The funeral services were held at the house and were in charge of the Masonic and G. A. R. orders, Rev. Chas. E. Perkins preaching the sermon, and were attended by many friends and neighbors. He was born in Cork, Ireland, Dec. 25, 1832 and came to Keosauqus in 1857. In 1862 he enlisted as a member of Co. H., Nineteenth Iowa Infantry, and served as an excellent soldier with that regiment until it was mustered out in 1865. On Sept. 28, 1865, at the home of Joshua S. Sloan in Keosauqua he was united in marriaged with Miss Mary Black, his old army chaplain, Rev J. D. Sands, performing the ceremony, and they lived happily together until January 30, 1896, when disease took the loved wife to the world beyond. No children were born to them. After the death of his wife his niece, Miss Lizzie Martin, kept house and tenderly cared for him until death called him away. Everybody liked "Uncle Dan," as he was familiarly called by all our town people. He was kind hearted and thoroughly honest, and we don't know that we ever heard him speak anything but charitable and kind words of anyone. Since he located at Keosauqua in 1857, except while in the army, his face has been familiar on our streets, and he will be sadly missed. The community sorrows with his relatives because of the death of Uncle Dan.
