Charles A. Johnston, 78, retired farmer, died early Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the Jefferson County hospital after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 13 at 1:30 p.m. at the Birmingham Presbyterian church in charge of the Rev. Wayne Lowry. Burial was in Maple Hill cemetery.

Johnston made his home on a farm on the Jefferson-Van Buren county line north of Birmingham for the past 45 years. He was born March 28, 1885 near Birmingham, the son of William H. and Mira Ross Johnston.

He was married to Mae Thiele March 14, 1918. Surviving are his wife and one sister, Mrs. Jessie Danielson, Fairfield.

Johnston was a member of church, serving as an elder for 33 years. He also taught a Sunday school class for more than 50 years. He was a rural school director for 25 years.

One brother preceded him in death.
