Birmingham Boy Drowns at Lacey Park

Robert Donald Moore, 16, of Birmingham drowned in the lake at Lacey-Keosauqua State Park Sunday, June 9, about 4:30 P.M. after he reportedly disappeared under the lake's newly-installed raft. The youth couldn't swim, it is reported.

Sheriff Orville Lee said he disappeared under a raft and his companions believed him to be "playing" until he failed to come up some minutes late.

The lifeguard was called but it was too late. A doctor, nurse, and the fire department administered first aid but he failed to respond. There were hundreds of people in the lake when the drowning occurred, Lee said.

Moore was accompanied to Keosauqua by Mickey Bainbridge, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bainbridge, Fairfield.

Bainbridge said when he dove into the water from the raft, Moore was seated along the edge resting. When Bainbridge returned to the raft, Moore was gone.

He was born Oct. 15, 1951, at Fairfield, the son of Robert F. and Beverly Hootman Moore. He would have been a senior at Van Buren Community High School this fall and had been working this summer at the Birmingham Lumber Yard.

Survivors include his parents; three brothers, Billy, Terry and Raymond, at home; one sister, Pamela, at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hootman of Fairfield and Mrs. Julia Moore of Stockport.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday at Birmingham Free Methodist church with the Rev. Lesley Sellers and Stanley Long officiating. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery, Birmingham. Arrangements by Burch Funeral Home in Birmingham.
