Adelene Holland

Adelene Atkins, daughter of J.B. and Mary Atkins, was born near Milton, Iowa on Dec. 27, 1878; and passed away at the Davis County hospital in Bloomfield, Iowa, on Feb. 14, 1960 at the age of 81 years, 1 month, and 20 days, after a critical illness of three weeks.

She received her early education in the rural school near Milton, and later attended the Milton public schools.

On Jan. 20, 1897 she was united in marriage to Frank Holland at the parental Atkins home in Milton. For eight months they lived at the Hollandale Farm, the third generation to live in the early pioneered, ancestral home. They moved to their newly constructed home in August, where together they had lived for 63 years. To this union were born two children, John R. and Phyllis.

Addie became a member of the Grace Methodist church in Milton on July 15, 1894 where she has remained faithful and active. She served in the church school many years as Children's Superintendent, General Superintendent and instigated the organization of the Berean Study Class. She sang in the church choir; was a member of the Woman's Home Missionary Society; was the last president of the Ladies Aid; and a charter member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service serving on the reorganization committee. In the community she was a charter member in the Woman's Club, assisting in its organization for community betterment.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Will E. and Harry; and one sister, Etta Craven.

Surviving are her devoted husband, Frank; her two children, John R. of Milton and Mrs. T.D. (Phyllis) Robinson of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Mrs. Fannie Hill of Missouli, Mont.; four grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren ; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Addie will long be remembered for her qualities of leadership, her joyful nature, and devotion to her family and God.

Funeral services were held at the Grace Methodist church in Milton on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1960 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Harold Harryman officiating. Interment was in Sunnyside cemetery.
