Abba Ellen Pendarvis

Abba Ellen Pendarvis, daughter of Rodney and Catherine Gove, was born near Hoppers Mills, Henderson County Ill., on Nov. 27, 1873 and departed this life Oct. 26, 1962, at the Good Samaritan Home near Ottumwa, Iowa at the age of 88 years and 11 months.

She grew up on a farm near Raritan, Ill., and graduated from the "Weaver Academy" at Media. She taught school near Raritan until her marriage to Perry P. Pendarvis on Oct. 4, 1893. They had observed their 69th wedding anniversary this month. To this union were born four children, one of whom passed away in infancy.

In 1910 they moved with their family from Illinois to a farm near Pittsburg, Iowa, where they lived until moving to Ames, Iowa. In Ames they operated a rooming house for students, and boarded many young people from Keosauqua who were attending college.

In later years they made their home in and near Keosauqua until going to make their home at the Good Samaritan Home about four years ago.

Mrs. Pendarvis was a member of the Methodist church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three children, two sisters and two brothers.

Remaining to mourn her passing are her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Mabelle Craig, two grandsons, Robert and John Craig, five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 28 at 2:30 p.m. at the Keosauqua Methodist church in charge of the pastor, Rev. E.S. Tschetter, assisted by Rev. J.C. Austin. Miss Lynnette Strait was the organist. Pallbearers were Ray Brownlee, Lowell Gove, Gordon Gove, Ray, Randell, Harry McIntosh, and Lawrence Daugherity. Interment was in Pittsburg cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home.
