MRS. J.C. CALHOUN

Gertrude Christian Calhoun was born Oct. 1, 1866, at Carlyle, Kan., and died May 5, 1952, at Iola, Kan., at the age of 85 years, eight months and five days.

Her parents, James W. and Jane Steele Christian, traveled from Virginia in the early 1860's and settled on the prairie. Gertrude was the third of seven children. Lutie Thomas of Price, Utah; Virginia Dickerson and Dr. R.O. Christian of Iola are still living.

Mrs. Calhoun received her education in the schools of Carlyle and Iola and Kansas State Normal of Emporia, Kan. She taught in Iola until her marriage. Many of the older residents of Iola remember her as their early teacher.

She married Julian C. Calhoun July 19, 1892, and they came to Iowa. They lived at Iowa City the fist year while Mr. Calhoun finished law school. Then, he opened an office in Milton. It was there their first child, Dana, was born. She lived to be only seven months old. In 1895 they came to Keosauqua and lived there until Mr. Calhoun's death in 1936.

Mrs. Calhoun took an active part in all the work of the church, teaching a Sunday school class, working for the foreign and home missionary groups. She gave generously of her time to the library. She was a member of P.E.O. member of P.E.O.

She leaves one daughter, Maude, son-in-law Ralph Campbell, three grandsons, Calhoun, Ord and Julian; and three great granddaughters, Janis, Marsha and Constance.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Burton C. Bastuscheck in the Keosauqua Methodist church on Wednesday morning, May 7 at 10 o'clock. Burial was at Winchester, Iowa.
