Mrs. M.L. Hammes

Mrs. M.L. Hammes, 68, Sigourney, died Tuesday, March 27 at 6 a.m. at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, which she entered Feb. 27 because of a heart ailment.

She was Cecelia Striegel, daughter of Anton and Agnes Heuberger Striegel, and was born Sept. 11, 1893, in Harper. She was married April 21, 1914, to Mike Hammes of Clear Creek, who survives. They farmed in the Clear Creek community until retiring in 1959 to their home in Sigourney. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Besides her husband she leaves five sons, Edwin and Kenneth Hammes of Sigourney, Lawrence Hammes of Keota, Marvin Hammes of Fairfield and Cletus Hammes of Cedar Rapids; seven daughters, Mrs. Alvie Heisdorffer, Mrs. John Baker and Mrs. Kenneth Conrad of Keota, Mrs. Anthony Conrad of Harper, Mrs. George Clubb and Mrs. Charles Ulin of Sigourney and Mrs. Donald Paarman of Cedar Rapids and a number of grandchildren.

There are five brothers, Cyril Striegel of Cedar Rapids, Lawrence Striegel of LaPorte, Ind., Cletus Striegel of Harper, Clemens Striegel of Sigourney and Fintan Striegel of Oskaloosa, and two sisters, Mrs. A.A. Peiffer of Sigourney and Mrs. Pete Osweiler of Bonaparte. One sister, Mrs. Teresa Sullivan, died in 1956.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 30 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rev. J.M. Mackin officiated. Burial was in Clear Creek Cemetery.
