George V. Leffler

George Vale Leffler, 82, died in Grinnell Friday noon, March 9.

A widely known farmer and community leader in Van Buren county, he had been ill since December.

Eldest of eight children of Andrew J. and Lydia Vale Leffler he was born in Cedar Township, Van Buren County, June 26, 1879.

He was educated in rural schools, the Academy of Central College in Pella, Iowa, and Iowa State College, where he graduated in 1904.

He was married Aug. 28, 1912, to Lucrettia Roberts of Bonaparte, who preceded him in death Oct. 18, 1948.

Mr. Leffler owned and operated a 320-acre farm in Cedar Township, the one on which he was born and spent 79 years of his life.

He was a leader in organizing the County Farm Institute, prior to organization of the extension service.

He was a charter member of the Van Buren County Farm Bureau. He later served as president and district director of the Iowa Farm Bureau Board.

In 1927 he was an Iowa Master Farmer. In 1951 he was awarded a Master Swine Producers medal.

He was secretary of the local school board for 44 years in Harrisburg district. He organized an educational entertainment Sunday evening program for his community, which held interest of youth in a wide area.

He was a member of the Harrisburg Baptist Church more than 65 years. He served as treasurer and trustee. He helped to organize the Roberts Memorial Foundation in Keosauqua and was its first president.

Since February 1959, he retired and moved to Grinnell where he had an apartment in the Mayflower retirement home.

Surviving are his son, Guston Leffler of near Bonaparte; two grandchildren; a brother, John N. Leffler of Stockport; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Nelson to Goldfield, Iowa, and Mrs. Irene Wells and Mrs. Martha Forman, both of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 12 at 2 p.m. at the Harrisburg Baptist Church. Rev. Ronald Wells was in charge. Burial was in Vale Cemetery.
