OBITUARY
Mrs. Mary Proper (Nee Sedgwick) died at her home in Harrisburg Township, Van Buren County, Iowa, September 30th, 1898. She was born in Perry, Hector Township, T[?]upheris county, N. Y., Aug. 4th, 1821. She was married to L. W. Proper, in Trunirnsburg, N. Y., April 26, 1843. They then came to Iowa, arriving in Harrisburg Tp. Oct. 2nd. Thus it was just 55 years, to the day, from arrival in the state, until the day of her burial.
She was Baptized at Bonaparte, Iowa in 1854, by Rev. Milton Sutton and united with the Baptist church at that place. But when the Harrisburg church was organized she united with it, being one of the charter members. She was still a member of this church at the time of her death.
She leaves to mourn her absence a husband, L. W. Proper, and two sons, D. D., Milton. Her son William died in 1878, and daughter Carrie in 1886.
She was a devoted wife and loving faithful mother and was respected by all who knew her. She had been in poor health for several years, [she] had failed very noticably during the last few months. She was ready and anxious to go to her eternal home and death had no horrors for her. In her last illness she was surrounded by her near relatives and many kind friends who ministered to her wants. Her funeral services were held in the Harrisburg Baptist church, Sunday Oct. 2 1898, at 11 o'clock A. M. Rev W. J. McCollum preached the farewell sermon, from 1st Corinthians. There was a large attendance of friends at the services and many followed the remains to their last resting place in Harrisburg Cemetry [sic]. The choir, with Mr. Duane Cass at the organ, so[rest cut-off] [edits and remainder from Entler clipping] sounded several beautiful and appropriate songs.
The casket was covered with flowers which were arranged in beautiful designs.
The pall bearers were B. R. Vale, C. L. Farnum, S. Logan, E. Pease, W. Robinson and J. Holmes.
