Rev. George Walter Barber died at his home in Eldon, Iowa, about four o'clock Thursday afternoon, June 29, at the age of 88. His health had been failing about two years. He suffered a stroke in 1937 and had been confined to his home since October, 1938.

For thirty-four years he was in active service as pastor of Methodist churches of southeastern Iowa, including appointments at Farmington, Selma, Libertyville, Chillicothe, Bussey, Montrose, South Muscatine and others, and was often called to Bonaparte to preach funeral services for his friends and relatives.

He was born in Monroe county near Eddyville August 28, 1850. At an early age he moved to Bonaparte where he grew to manhood, and was the stepson of Robert Meek, one of the operators of the Bonaparte mills. In the year 1887 he was ordained a Methodist elder.

Mr. Barber was united in marriage with Miss Carrie Kean, who preceded him in death in 1906. He and Miss Esther Longstreth were married in 1918. After his retirement from the ministry in 1918 he lived in Stockport about two years, then located to Eldon which has since been his home.

Surviving are his wife, one son, Harry, and two grandchildren, Jack Barber and Mrs. William Hunt, all of Ottumwa.

He became a member of the Masonic lodge at Pulaski and later transferred his membership to Eldon.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Methodist church of Eldon, conducted by the Rev. J.W. Baker of Eldon, assisted by Rev. Snook of Wayland. Burial in Eldon cemetery.
