OBITUARY OF THOS. B. MURPHY
------------------------
Thomas Benton Murphy was born Feb. 5, 1821, in New Orleans, La. He was the eldest child of John and Margaret Murphy. He came to Iowa in an early day and on Sept. 4, 1846, the year Iowa became a state, he was united in marriage with Martha Jane Carter. To them were born ten children, all of whom are living with the exception of John and Thomas Benton. After over sixty-two years of life together his wife was taken away, and he was left to mourn. He missed her and mourned as only those can who are permitted to travel "life's highway" together many years. But not for long as it has only been three years last January since she left him. Since his wife's death he had made his home with his sons William, Frederick and Allan. He was taken seriously ill at the home of his son Fred in Des Moines township, last Wednesday, April 10. At no time did he complain of being in any pain. It was just a slipping from this life to the life beyond, and he passed away as peacefully as a child going to sleep, on Tuesday morning, April 16, 1912, being at the time of his death 91 years, 2 months and 11 days old. He leaves to mourn, children, William H. of Vernon; Cornelius, of Kansas; Charles and Mrs. Alice McIntosh, of Des Moines; Mrs. Mary Strickling, Portland, Oregon; Frederick P. of Keosauqua; Joseph A, of Harrison, Neb.; Allan G., of Brookpark, Minn; also one other, [can't read-C.?] W. Dannels, who was as near as a son, having made his home with them for many years; also thirty grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. He was reared in the Catholic faith, but six years ago he and his wife united with the Methodist Episcopal church of Vernon. The funeral was held from the Vernon M. E. church, Wednesday, April 17, in charge of his pastor, Rev. J. H. Taylor. The body was laid to rest in Vernon cemetery beside that of his wife.

I would like to correspond with anyone that has more information on the MURPHY family, especially daughter Alice who married Henry M. McIntosh.
