BATES M. MANNING
KEOSAUQUA -- Bates M. Manning, 74, died unexpectedly Friday about 1 p.m. while sitting in a chair in front of Hotel Manning. He lived at the hotel built by his grandfather.
A retired insurance man and magazine salesman, Mr. Manning had lived in Keosauqua most of his life, spending a few years at Kirksville, Mo.
The only child of Albert and Maude Miller Manning, he was born in Keosauqua March 3, 1889. He was married in 1913 to Madge Landis of Keosauqua, who preceded him in death in 1956.
Mr. Manning was a member of the Masons in Keosauqua, including Blue Lodge No. 10, Moore Chapter 23, and El Chanan Commandery.
Survivors include a son, John A. of Keosauqua; two daughters, Mrs. George Friedmeyer of Ankeny and Mrs. Paul Morgan of Ames; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Keosauqua Congregational Church with the Rev. Richard M. Carpenter, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Purdom Cemetery. The body is at Burnett-Cattcott [sic] Funeral Home.
