Obituary of C.P. Whitney.

Carlton Perry Whitney, youngest child of Ann Jeannette Harwood and Reverend Leonard Whitney, was born Sept. 8th, 1860, in Keokuk, Io., and passed away at his home in Keosauqua, Oct. 21st, 1923, aged 63 years, 1 month and 13 days. Mr. Whitney's father died when Carlton was two years of age, leaving him and his older brother Harwood to make their way in the world which they both did successfully. Mr. Whitney received his education in private and public schools in Keokuk, Iowa, and at Mankato, Minnesota Normal College. At the age of 15 he went to Des Moines, Iowa, to begin work for the Rock Island railroad as baggageman, and climbed up to station agent at Casey, Io., at the age of 19. Some years later he accepted a position with the Union Pacific as chief clerk in the auditing department, where he worked for 5 years, then accepted a position as traveling auditor when he had a nervous breakdown. 30 years ago he was sent to Keosauqua, Io., as station agent which position he held for 13 years. The office work became too confining so he gave up railroading after 29 1/2 years of service.

Some years later he started in the flour and feed business in a small way, and by his shrewd business sense, fair dealing and above all, his honesty, it thrived and grew and in a few years he was in the wholesale and retail business and was largest shipper of grain in southeastern Iowa. In politics Mr. Whitney was a republican.

On December, 18?? (he was) united in marriage to Carrie Mason Steinmeyer, and to this union, one child was born, a little daughter the only grandchild on both sides of the family. Mr. Whitney joined the Congregational church about 27 years ago, and was a faithful member and was a faithful member and attendant when his health would permit. Mr. Whitney's passing away is the last member of this once prominent family in Keokuk. He leaves to mourn his passing on, his devoted wife, and loving daughter Mrs. James A. Addison, of Omaha, Nebr.

Funeral services were held at the home in Keosauqua, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, in charge of Rev. J.C. Caughlan, of the M.E. church. Burial was in the Keokuk cemetery beside his mother, Wednesday, Oct. 24.
