LOWELL VALENTINE.

Lowell Valentine was born in South Paris, Maine, August 30, 1810, and died at his home in Keosauqua, Iowa, January 31, 1910, in the 90th year of his life. He came to Keosauqua in 1850 and for something over 30 years was engaged in the furniture and undertaking business. For a number of years in the latter part of his life he was a member of the mercantile firm of Maltbie & Valentine at this place, but he took no part as a salesman, practically leaving the management of the store to his partner, John a. Maltbie, in whom he had the greatest (trust) and confidence. Mr. Valentine was twice married. First to Miss Judith W. Hackett in 1842, and after her death to Miss Mary Power, who died some three years ago. No children were born to either union. During the last few years of his life he was afflicted with blindness, and during the last half years or more had been confined to the home. Here he was tenderly cared for by his only sister Mrs. Bridgham, assisted by Miss Beatty as housekeeper. The funeral was held at the home on Wednesday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. J.W. Cheney, and the burial was in Purdom cemetery. He joined the Congregational church when a boy twelve years old, and he brought his religion with him when he came to Keosauqua nearly sixty years ago. He was one of the useful members of the church, who lived his religions profession and his influence was always felt for the cause of righteousness. In all respect he was an exemplary citizen and his glorious memory will live after him.
