Walter E. Hill, age 74, of rural Birmingham, died November 21, 2016, at the University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Walt was born November 5, 1942, at Mount Pleasant, the son of Max D. and Mildred Ruth Graf Hill.

He lived most of his life in Jefferson County. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1961.

He was a policeman in Mt. Pleasant before joining the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department as deputy sheriff, serving for over 30 years.

He married Deb Monson on July 5, 1963, and they later divorced. He married Bonnie Jean Runklle on March 21, 1980.

Walt was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Fairfield, a charter member of L.I.E.N., Clinton Masonic Lodge # 15, Kilwinning Masonic Lodge #198 of Batavia, York Rite Body, ROJ, and was currently Chief Rabban of KAABA Temple in Davenport, and a member of the Eagles Lodge #1927 of Fairfield. He was an avid Dodgers and Cubs fan.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie on June 17, 2007, his parents and a grandson, Eric Baker.

Surviving are his companion of nine years Mary Coffin, three children: Karen Hill of Hills, IA, Norma Baker and her husband Tony of Fairfield, and Billie Ray Hill and wife Lynn of Oskaloosa; stepchildren, Dale (Amanda) Ingwersen of Douds, Jeffrey (Tammy) Ingwersen of Washington, IA, Jodi Howard of Albia, Thomas Ross of North Liberty, IA; 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are his two brothers, Larry Hill of Fairfield, Keith (Diana) Hill of Brighton, and his sister, Donna (Kenny) Greiner of Brighton.

Funeral services were held November 26, 2016, at the First Lutheran Church in Fairfield with Pastor Greg Friedrich officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham. A Masonic Rites service. was held at Raymond Funeral Home.

Arrangements were in the care of Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
