Elizabeth M. "Betty" Smith, 88, of Fairfield, formerly of Douds and Keosauqua, died November 19, 2016, at Jefferson County Health Center, Fairfield. She was born July 7, 1928, in Fairfield to Clinton and Jessie B. Purdy Gray and married Murl A. Smith. He died March 20, 2001.

Betty attended Fairfield schools. She lived in Douds for many years and drove a School bus for Douds ellementary and kept the books for her husband. Betty attended Zion Bible Church. She was a great cook and seamstress and enjoyed needlepointing.

She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Schafer (Joe) of Downers Grove, IL, and a granddaughter, Lisa Payson (John) of Illinois. In addition to her husband Murl, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Ross, and a grandson, James Schafer.

In accordance with her wishes her body has been cremated. A joint graveside service with her daughter, Peggy Ross, will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday November 28, 2016, at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, east of Douds, Pastor Phil Ross officiating.

Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, is handling the arrangements.
