..SDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1944

MRS. JENNIE CHANEY

Jennie May Shepherd, daughter of Henry C. and Hannah Stull Shepherd, was born on the home farm near Bentonsport, Sept. 30, 1877, and passed from this life at the home of her son, Orville Chaney near Galesburg, Ill., on the night of Nov. 14, 1944 aged 67 years 1 month and 14 days.

Jennie grew to womanhood in the Bentonsport neighborhood, attended the home school, and on Nov. 30, 1898, was united in marriage with Roy R. Chaney also of the same community. The young couple made their home for the first five years on a farm at Pierceville. In the spring of 1904 they moved back to the farm adjoining the Shepherd homestead. In November 1922, they moved to Bonaparte, which has since been their home.

In her early teens Mrs. Chaney became a member of the Methodist church of Bentonsport, transferring her membership to the Presbyterian church of that town in 1916 when the Methodist church closed. Nov. 28, 1926, she with her husband united with the Bonaparte Presbyterian church. She was ever a worker in the church societies, especially the Sunshine and the Ladies Aid. She was also a faithful member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.

Mrs. Chaney was one of three children: Her brother, John Shepherd, died in 1921. The other brother, Geo. Shepherd, lives at Chester, Mont. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Chaney were the parents of one son, Orville, who, with his wife Elizabeth and their children, were the pride and joy of Mrs. Chaney's life. She was never so happy as when she could be with them. Three weeks ago she and her husband had gone for a visit to Orville's home near Galesburg, Ill., and it was there, surrounded by those she loved and who were devoted to her, that she was stricken last Friday night and the end came three days later.

Of her immediate family she leaves to mourn her husband and son and wife, and the grandchildren, Hazel Chaney Wolf of Bentonsport, William Roy of Stockport, Grace who is employed at the Shaeffer Pen Co., Ft. Madison, Earl, who last week enlisted in the navy, and the four younger children, Melvin, Robert, Ruth and Donna at home. And one great grandson, John Wesley Wolf. Also her brother and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Chaney had many friends, and she enjoyed their friendships, ever dispensing hospitality, or lending a hand in sickness or time of need.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Bonaparte Presbyterian church, Rev. E.W.F. Holler of Brooklyn, Iowa, officiating. Interment in Bentonsport cemetery. Singing by Sam Wolfe, Leslie Watts and George Lorton with Mrs. Leslie Watts accompanist.
