SMITH W. BROOKHART

Funeral services of Smith W. Brookhart were held Monday, Nov. 20 at Washington, Iowa. He died the previous Wednesday at Whipple, Ariz.

The center of many political storms in Iowa, Brookhart went to the United States Senate in 1922 to fill an unexpired term. He ran for re-election in 1924 and apparently won, but the Senate finally decided in 1926 in favor of his Democratic opponent, Dan Steck of Ottumwa. Brookhart ran for the Senate in 1926 and won. Losing the nomination for re-election in 1932, to Henry Field, Shenandoah nurseryman, Brookhart ran as an independent in the fall election, but finished a poor third to Louis Murphy, Dubuque, the successful Democratic candidate who replaced Brookhart in the Senate.

Brookhart was born Feb. 2, 1869, in a log house in Scotland County, Mo., not far from the Iowa-Missouri line. He moved in early life to Jefferson county and to Van Buren county in 1882 where he studied law and was united in marriage to Jennie Hearn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hearn of Keosauqua, who died last December 30.

He is survived by two daughters, Dr. Florence B. Yount, Prescott, Ariz. physician, and Mrs. Edith Millard of Philadelphia, Pa., and by four sons, Lt. Col. Smith W. Brookhart of Washington, D.C., Charles E. Brookhart of Calcutta, India, John R. Brookhart of Duluth, Minn., and Capt. Joseph Brookhart of Clovis, New Mexico.
