Charles Stebbins

Charles Cresap Stebbins, eldest child of Charles Sumner and Berenice Cresap Stebbins, was born in Bonaparte, Iowa, August 11, 1900, and passed away in the Des Moines Methodist hospital at Des Moines, Friday Dec. 22, 1944, being at that time 44 years, 4 months and 11 days of age.

He grew to manhood in Bonaparte and graduated from the local high school in 1918, attended Iowa State college in Ames the following year and later graduated from the State University of Iowa at Iowa City with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Commerce.

On Sept. 30, 1930, he was united in marriage to Frances Joy Koepke of Des Moines. To this union one child, Carol Lynn was born.

He leaves to mourn besides his wife and child, his father and mother, two sisters, Mrs. Louise Ratliff of Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. Marjorie Hale of Eggertsville, N.Y., one uncle, Hiram Stebbins of Keokuk, two aunts, Mrs. Dora Moore and Miss Margaret Stebbins of Bonaparte, in addition to several other relatives and a host of friends.

He became a member of Bonaparte Lodge No. 73 A.F.&A.M. on Dec. 28, 1922, was elected and served as Master of the lodge in 1936. On Jan. 31, 1936, he took the proficiency test in Masonry at Iowa City which he passed and served as a District Lecturer in Masonry since that time.

Charles was not only active in his Lodge work but was a good athlete as well having played basketball and base ball with his home town and being a member of several semi-pro ball clubs throughout the country. While attending the State University he played all the infield positions on the University base ball team and served as captain his senior year. After graduating from the university he was employed as secretary of the Van Buren County Agricultural Adjustment association, leaving there to accept a position as auditor for the Iowa State Social Welfare board and at the time of his death he was head of the Department of General Accounts in the state office.

About 18 months ago he suffered a heart attack and since then has had several recurrent attacks and recently he was hospitalized with this and an additional spell of pneumonia which proved too much to stand, death resulting about 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Bonaparte Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. John S. Ellis, with Masonic services in the church. Interment in Bonaparte cemetery.
