HON.M.A.'COID'S DEATH
The Ex-Congressman and Noted Lawyer Passed Away at Fairfield Tuesday.

Hon. M.A. McCoid died at his home at Fairfield Tuesday at 2 a.m. He had been an invalid for a year or more. Monday he suffered another stroke of paralysis, the third, and succumbed a few hours thereafter. Mr. E.L. McCoid of this place was notified and reached his father's bedside Monday night. Mrs. McCoid went to Fairfield yesterday.

The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Col. Wilkin, S.W. Manning, F.W. Roberts, J.P. Starr, E.R. Harlan, H.B. Sloan, S.E. Irish, Oscar McCrary, R.B. Rowley, J.W. Burns, T.C. Jackson, W.B. Fleming, J.C. Strickling, W.R. Wherry and Robt. Dahlberg and perhaps others of this place will attend.

Moses A. McCoid was 63 years old. He had been one of the leading lawyers of this part of the state for more than 30 years. In 1861 he enlisted in Company E, 2d Iowa Infantry, and served during the war. Capt. Duckworth was a member of the same regiment and General Weaver was colonel. After the war Mr. McCoid served eight years as state senator and in 1878 was elected to congress, succeeding Dr. J.C. Stone of Burlington, who succeeded Geo. W. McCrary. He was elected to the 47th and 48th congresses, being succeeded by Benton J. Hall.

Since his retirement from congress, Mr. McCoid had almost altogether eschewed politics and devoted himself to law, being regarded as one of the three ablest lawyers in southeastern Iowa. During the past year Mr. McCoid's literary reputation was greatly enhanced by the publication of a purpose novel which he had written in spare moments entitled "John Williamson of Hardscrabble," which is said to be a work of much merit.

Mr. McCoid was a partner of his son, Mr. E.I. McCoid in, the law business at this place, and was formerly the law partner of the late Ben Johnson.
