STICKEN WITH PARALYSIS

James Caruthers, An Old Resident of Pittsburg Precinct, Died Sunday Morning.

James Caruthers, a resident of Pittsburg precinct since 1841, died Sunday morning, June 22, aged 72 years. Mr. Caruthers had been in ill health for several years from some nervous or heart affection. Some time after he had gone to bed Saturday night it was discovered he had suffered a paralytic stroke. He remained in an unconscious condition until about 6 o'clock Sunday morning, when he expired.

Deceased was born April 30, 1830, in Harrison county, Ohio, and moved with his parents to this county in April 1841. His father was a veteran of the Mexican war. March 12, 1852, deceased was married to Miss Catherine Lyminstull, to whom three children were born, and who died in 1857. In 1858 he was married to Miss Mary E. Manning, who was the mother of five sons and one daughter who survives him.

Deceased was in Keosauqua Saturday in apparently as good health as he had been in the past two years. This reminds us of the uncertainty of death, and suggests the thought whether it is not the wisest to live out our allotted time justly and uprightly. Deceased had lived in this county 61 years, and took pride and pleasure in the fact that he was one of the pioneers of the county and had taken part in converting a wilderness into productive farms and pleasant homes. He was loved by his family as a kind husband and father and respected by all who knew him as a good neighbor and citizen.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the (Ream) Presbyterian church, the services being conducted by Rev. J.A. Hahn of Lebanon.
