William John Norton

William John Norton, son of John and Harriet Norton, was born March 31, 1879, near Wellman, Iowa; and he parted this life, after a lingering illness at the Davis County Hospital, July 17, 1957 at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 16 days.

At an early age, he moved with his parents to a farm near Hartwick, in Poweshiek County, Iowa. He received his training in the rural schools of Poweshiek Co.

On January 14, 1903, he was united in marriage to Blanche Gwinn at Marengo, Iowa. To this union were born two children: Ruth and John Milton.

For eight years, he and his family were stewards of the County Home at Montezuma. The family then moved on a farm in South Dakota for two years. Upon their return to Iowa, they became stewards of the County Home at Washington, Iowa. From this work they moved to a farm near Stockport, and in 1951, moved to their present home south of Milton.

As a young man, he united with the Methodist Church. For forty years, he has been a faithful to it and at the time of his death was a member of the Milton Methodist Church where he worked willingly as long as his health permitted.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James and Charles.

Surviving are his widow, and children, Mrs. Ruth Griggs and husband, Orville, of West Chester, Iowa; Milton Norton and wife, Viola, of Milton, Iowa; six grandchildren; one niece, and three nephews.

He was an active citizen and good neighbor. He was firm in those things which seemed right and always had concern for the welfare of others.

Funeral services were held at the Milton Methodist Church on Saturday, July 20, 1957 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Harold Harryman of Milton officiating. Interment was in Sunnyside Cemetery.
