William L. Gaston

William Lemuel Gaston, eldest son of James and Rosa McIntire Gaston, was born March 16, 1876, near Mt. Sterling, Iowa, and passed away at his home near Bonaparte, Iowa, Sept. 23, 1938, after a lingering illness.

Sept. 21, two days prior to his passing, was the 40th anniversary of his marriage to Millie S. DeHart. To this happy union three children, Beryl, who passed away 20 years ago at the age of 18 years, Georgia and Keith, were born.

He became a member of the Center Chapel Methodist church 34 years age and remained a faithful member until the time of his death. He was a man of deep Christian experiences, his faith in Jesus Christ and his confidence in the goodness of God gave him peace and courage and to the very last he was able to face the future unafraid knowing that his transition would be his "home going."

He loved music and felt that his talent in song was a sacred for the blessing and comfort of others. He was devoted to the church and was found in God's House on the Sabbath Day. His home was his citadel and his loved ones his inspiration. In the community he was known as a Christian gentleman and was loved by all who knew him, in his passing we lose a valuable citizen, a good neighbor and a loyal friend.

He is survived by his wife and two children, Mrs. Georgia Mounce and Keith Gaston, both of Keosauqua, Keith living on the old home farm, two grandsons, Carroll William Mounce and Ned Harper Gaston, his aged mother, Mrs. James Gaston, and a sister, Mr. Mamie Madden of Mt. Sterling, and a brother, Clyde Gaston of near Farmington. these together with a number of other relatives and a host of friends, mourn his departure.

Much could be said of this useful life but words cannot add to a life that has been lived as an open book. We shall remember him as we knew him for the clean, fine, wholesome Christian gentleman that he was.

Funeral services conducted by the Rev. C.H. Orf were held from the Center Chapel Methodist church Sunday afternoon, Sept. 25. Interment was in the cemetery in the church yard. Music was furnished by the Williams Bros. quartet, accompanied by Miss Bertha Saunderson.
