Inquest to be Held Thursday in Death of Ft. Madison Woman

NAUVOO, Ill. - An inquest will be held Thursday night in the Sharman Funeral Home into the death of Mrs. Kathryn M. Shepherd, 53, of Fort Madison, who was found dead of a bullet wound in the home of her sister, Mrs. Raymond Kelly, here yesterday morning.

Hancock County Coroner William Seaver of Hamilton said that Mrs. Shepherd apparently took her own life with a .22 caliore(sp) target pistol belonging to Mrs. Kelly's husband.

She was found dead on the bathroom floor of the Kelly home by her sister on her return from town. The bullet wound was behind her right ear and the pistol was lying on the floor by her body.

The former Kathryn Sallen, she is survived by her husband, Byrle B. Shepherd; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Lyon, Fort Madison, and Mrs. Robert Clark, Fort Madison; one son, Jack Shepherd, Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Raymond (Margaret) Kelly, Nauvoo, and Mrs. George (Marie) Brasfield, Fort Madison; six brothers, Frank Sallen, Enderlin, N.D., Lawrence Sallen, Topeka, Kan., Norbert Sallen, Houghton, and George, Al and William Sallen, all of Fort Madison.

Funeral arrangements are pending. The body is at Nieters Chapel in Ft. Madison.

Miss Kathryn Sallen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sallen of Fort Madison was united in maaiage(sp) to Byrle Shephard(sp) of that city, at Sacred Heart church Tuesday morning May 31, 1921, Rev. Peter Hoffman officiating.

The young couple were attended by Miss Ruth Lawlor, cousin of the groom, as bridesmaid, and Mr. L. Sallen, brother of the bride, as best man.

A wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride's parents. The young couple left the same day for a trip to Kansas City. They will make their home in Fort Madison.
