LEONARD EARL ELLIOTT

Leonard Earl Elliott passed away at 11:30 a.m., Sept. 21, 1955, at the Van Buren County Memorial hospital, Keosauqua. He suffered a fall from a porch roof at the home of his brother, F.S. Elliott, near Bentonsport, 24 hours earlier, from which he never regained consciousness.

He was the son of Francis M. and Priscilla Huber Elliott. He was born Feb. 5, 1882, in the same home of the birth of his mother, in Winchester, Iowa. The family later moved to a farm near Bentonsport, which is now the home of his Finley.

At the age of 21 he went to the Oklahoma Territory where he ????ed a claim near Goodwell, Okla.

On Dec. 28, 19111 he was married to Cora Gaston, at the home of her parents, near Vernon, Iowa. they made their home in Oklahoma for 3 years. They then returned to Iowa where he continued to farm until 1923. He then accepted a position with the Iowa State Highway Department at Donnellson, Iowa, where they lived for 28 years. He served several terms as councilman there, and was later mayor. He joined the Donnellson Methodist church where he was an active member, serving on various boards and committees. He retired in 1953, at which time they moved to their present home in Keosauqua, Iowa, to the among relatives and old friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Cora, three daughters, Mrs. Maxine Hughes of Keosauqua, Mrs. Edith Tweedy of Montrose, Iowa and Mrs. Edla Hoenig of Beardstown, Ill.; four grandsons and four granddaughters; three brothers, Thad of LaPorte, Colo., twin brother Glen of Cantril and Finley of Keosauqua; also six nephews and two nieces.

The past summer he served as caretaker of the Purdom and Valentine cemeteries. He most enjoyed doing things for others and many will long remember him for his deeds of kindness.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Center Chapel Methodist church, southeast of Keosauqua in charge of the Rev. Reynolds Murdock of Cantril. Music by Mr. and Mrs. Keith Gaston. Pallbearers were Thad Sherod, Donald Campbell, Harry McIntosh, Willis Beer, Lewis McDonald, Dwight DeHart, George Downing and John Scott. Burial in Center Chapel Cemetery.
