Obituary of Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas Nearly 95

Elizabeth Thomas, daughter of George and Elizabeth Thomas, was born in Indiana, March 20, 1825, and died March 12, 1920, at the home of her son Curtis, at Tyrone, Okla., aged 94 years, 11 months and 21 days. She, with her parents, came to Iowa in 1836, settling in Van Buren county near Mt. Sterling. She was married to James Hanan September 7, 1843, and to this union were born five children, one daughter and four sons, of whom only one son is living, Granville Hanan of Keosauqua. Her husband died in Oct., 1856. On March 23, she was married to Elijah A. Thomas and to them were born, Mrs. Laura Shamblin of Hillsboro, Iowa; Wesley Thomas, who died in infancy and Curtis Thomas of Tyrone, Okla. She, with her husband, moved to a farm near Hillsboro in the spring of 1862, and later to Hillsboro , where her husband died in December, 1899. She has one half sister living, that we know of, Mrs. John Sterling of Corydon, Iowa, and a number of grand children, great grand children and three great great grandchildren. She became a member of the M.E. church of Hillsboro about four years after it was organized in 1858. Funeral services were held, March 15, at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. John Thornton, Rev. Otto Wilson officiating, and burial was in the Hillsboro cemetery.
