MRS. MELISSA MATHIES
Melissa M. Kendall was born in Indiana April 7, 1844, and was married Sept. 15, 1864, to James Mathies. They came to Iowa in March 1856, and settled on a farm five miles west of Farmington where they made their home until four years ago, when they purchased a home in this town and fitted it up so they could spend the remainder of their days in comfort. But alas! We know not all the ways of Providence. Little did they think when they came here that their home would be broken up so soon. But last Friday night after many days and nights of anxious, weary watching her spirit took its flight to the bright spirit world and she exchanged her home on earth for a home, where there will be no sickness, pain or death. She would have been 64 years had she lived until the 7th of April.
Mrs. Mathies was the mother of six children, four girls and two boys, all of whom were present at the funeral. The names of the children are as follows: Retie Cartnal of Anson, Mo.; Ella Woods, Maldom, Iowa; Amanda Ruark, Annie Neally, Ernest Mathies, Farmington; Jesse Mathies, Ottumwa, Iowa.
The funeral services were held from the M. E. church Feb. 16, at 2 o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev. G. C. Goodenough, assisted by Rev. J. H. Koch. A large audience was present to pay the last tribute of respect to one who was generally beloved.
