One of his outstanding characteristics was an indomitable spirit which he manifested to the end. Always considerate of the feelings of his family, he played up to life, making plans for the future, seldom admitting the possibility that the end of ilfe(err) might be near. He fought end of life might be near. He fought a good fight and his unconquerable spirit is most fittingly expressed in Henley's "Invictus" -

"It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishment the scroll;
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul."
