JOSEPHINE IOWA GODOWN ALEXANDER - 1852-1926

Josephine Iowa, daughter of Mark and Mahala Godown, was born near Pittsburg, Iowa, August 12, 1852, and passed away December 8, 1926, aged 74 years, 3 months, and 27 days.

On August 25, 1877, she was united in marriage with George W. Alexander, and to them were born 13 children, 2 of whom died in infancy. Her first born, on whom she had leaned heavily in her declining years, Mrs. Stella Cass was called home July 6, 1922. Clyde, the fourth son, departed this life August 13, 1923. The husband and father passed away January 19, 1924, since which time the loneliness of her widowhood has been relieved by the loving devotion of her son, Manly, and his daughter, Hesper.

Those who survive are: Mrs. Jessie Perkins, Cardington, Ohio; Charley, Bentonsport, Iowa; Manly, George, and Joseph, Stockport, Iowa. Mrs. Blanche Cass, Bentonsport, Iowa; Mrs. Nellie Cross, Fort Madison, Iowa. Also 32 grandchildren.

Words fail in attempting to pay tribute to this worthy mother, who endured all the hardships, which were the lot of early settlers in the state for which she was named. Of herself, she gave lavishly for her children and grandchildren as well. It was while on a visit to see her daughter, Blanche, and the new granddaughter, Ella Lucille, that she was stricken with pneumonia. This with the weight of years, was more than the frail form could withstand. All who were so fortunate to know her, loved her and sorrow with the bereaved family, longing for the touch of a vanished hand and the sound of a voice that is still.
