H.C. Pickerel.

In the death of H.C. Pickerel, Batavia has lost one of her old settlers and one of the two or three remaining soldiers of the Civil War.

Henry Clay Pickerel was born July 27, 1844. He died at his home in Batavia, January 9, 1923, at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 12 days. He served in Co. B, 8th Iowa Cavalry during the Civil War. He has lived around Batavia for about fifty years.

On July 9, 1868, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth McQuarry. Nine children were born to this union of whom three have preceded him in death. Those remaining to mourn his death are his aged wife, one daughter, Mrs. Sheridan Beck of Eldon, and five sons, Ed of Hedrick; William of Birmingham; Clyde of Ramsen, Iowa; Logan of Troy and R.J. of Batavia.

Mr. Pickerel was of a family of 16 children, 11 girls and 5 boys. They have all passed away except three sisters: Mrs. Nancy Longsberry and Mrs. Josephine Longsberry of Kansas and Mrs. Bickford of Batavia. The funeral service was held at the home Wednesday at 1 o'clock conducted by Rev. C.E. Fitzsimmons. Interment was in the City Cemetery. - News
