A SAD DEATH.

About 2 o'clock last Friday morning, Miss Anna Hootman of Mt. Zion died at Keosauqua under unusual conditions. Two days previous she came here to have some teeth extracted and Dentist Curtis McClurg pulled five of them, performing the work without administering any anesthetic. The teeth were easily pulled and for a few moments afterwards Miss Hootman sat in the dentist's chair and conversed, when she complained of feeling dizzy and suddenly became faint. A physician was at once called and everything possible was done for her, but she soon lapsed into unconsciousness and continued in that condition until death came at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Rowe, adjoining, to which she had been conveyed.

No blame whatever attaches to Dentist McClurg because of the sad result following the extracting of the teeth. For some time Miss Hootman had been afflicted with Bright's disease which had reached an advanced stage, and the attending physicians say that before long that would have caused her death, which was only hastened by the shock of having her teeth pulled, convulsions, resulting from the acute development of the malady.

The body was taken to her home near Mt. Zion and on Saturday afternoon the funeral was held in the Presbyterian church near that place, the sermon being by Rev. McElheiney, after which the remains were buried were buried in the Miller chapel cemetery.

The deceased was 54 years of age and was held in high esteem by all her acquaintances. Much sympathy is expressed for the relatives and friends in their afflictions. The following note from a sister of the deceased explains itself:

Mt. Zion, Io., Aug. 29, 1905.
EDITORS OF REPUBLICAN;

We desire to say that Dr. McClurg is in no way responsible for our sister's death, as no anesthetic was administered whatever, she being opposed to taking anything.

MARY E. HOOTMAN.
