Obituary of Mrs. Sarah Perrine

Sarah Barker, daughter of Joseph and Anna Barker, was born September 5, 1840, and passed away at the home of her nieces Maude and Josie Barker at Mt. Zion December 3, 1925, age 85 years, 2 months and 28 days. In October 1884, she was united in marriage to J.S. Smith, who departed this life in May, 1887. In 1890 she was married to Samuel Perrine and lived west of Birmingham until his death in 1896. The remainder of her life was spent at Mt. Zion and probably no one in the community assisted at more weddings, births and neighborhood gatherings.

She was born during pioneer days in a log cabin on the Barker homestead. While she was still at home this cabin was replaced by a two-room one and this was later replaced by the two-story brick building which now stands. Of a family of seventeen only one sister Thressa Sherod remains. Besides this sister there are numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends who mourn her passing.

To the very last she kept her interest in the community and had been assisting in plans for this year's New Year's dinner. Everyone in the community will miss the interest and sympathy of Aunt Sade Perrine. She was the oldest living member of the Mt. Zion Presbyterian church and was a faithful and active worker in all its labors.

On November 17 she fell and fractured her hip and at her age could not survive the shock. The singular thing was her sister, two years older, Mrs. Belle Calhoun, was buried a month ago from the effects of a broken hip.

Funeral services were held at the Mt. Zion Presbyterian church, in charge of the pastor, Rev. Ervine, on Dec. 4, at 2 o'clock. Interment was at the Miller Chapel cemetery.
