Capt. James Elerick

Capt. James Elerick was born in Belmont county, Ohio, April 6, 1836, and died at Monrovia, California, August 7, 1922, aged 86 years, 2 months and 1 day. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. George Seimon, with whom he made his home since leaving Iowa, and one grandson, James E. Seimon, who were with him at the time of his death, and who reside in Hinkley, Calif. His wife, formerly Maggie Short, of near Kilbourne, Iowa, preceded him in death April 1, 1885. He was preceded in death April 1, 1885. He was also preceded by two infant sons.

Capt. Elerick enlisted July 17, 1861, in Company A, 59th Illinois Vol. Infantry, and was promoted captain of his company in December, 1862. He participated in the battles of Pea Ridge, siege of Corinth, Stone River, Perryville, Liberty Gap, Chicamauga, Lookout Mountain, Mission Ridge, Rocky Ford, Rasaca, Burnt Hickory, Kenesaw Mountain, Rough Station, Jonesborough, siege of Atlanta, Franklin and Nashville. He was honorably discharged December 25, 1865, having served his country 4 years, 5 months and 8 days.

He was a member of the House from Van Buren county in the 19th General Assembly and Senator from the Van Buren-Jefferson district in the 30th, 31st and 32nd General Assemblies, and served at the extra session of the 32nd. He was also sheriff of Van Buren county for two terms.

He came to Iowa with his parents in 1849 and settled in Van Buren county, Iowa, in the vicinity of Douds, where he made his home continuously until a few years ago, when he went to California to make his home with his daughter and her husband.

Capt. Elerick is remembered as one of Van Buren county's highly honored and most prominent citizens. Always true to his word, upright in all his dealings and always commanding respect of all whom he met.

The funeral took place from the M.E. church at Douds, Nov. 24, 1922, Rev. G.W. Barber, of Stockport, conducting the service. Burial was in Zion Lutehran cemetery.
