Carrie Collard, daughter of James and Emeline Collard, was born near Howelle, New York, July 12, 1847, and departed this life at the home of her daughter Mrs. J.E. Hanan at Yuma, Colo, where some eight weeks ago she had gone for a visit after spending the summer in Iowa with her daughter Mrs. George Davis. During the past eight years her health had been failing and in November, 1913, she suffered a severe stroke of paralysis, followed by others which caused her great suffering, which she bore with great fortitude. The last and fatal stroke came on the 8th of this month, from which she never rallied and gradually passed away on the morn of Dec. 14, 1916, aged 69 years, 5 months and 2 days. On Nov. 6, 1867, she was united in marriage to Clement B. Miller, who preceded her in death on the 18th of last March. After their marriage they remained in York State until the spring of 1876 when they came to Iowa, locating in Vernon Township, where practically the rest of their life was spent. While a young girl she united with the Congregational Church. After coming to Iowa her membership was transferred to the Congregational Church in Keosauqua. In 1884 she with her husband united with the Center Chapel M.E. Church. She was always active as a Sunday school teacher, church worker, and as officer of the Ladies’ Aid, her place of duty seldom being vacant. Left to mourn their loss are her four children, Emma Henry and Anna Hanan, of Yuma, Colo; Mate Davis of Keosauqua, Iowa, and Elbert C. Miller of Hillsboro, Iowa. Also 9 grandchildren. Three sisters and one brother also survive: Mrs. Susie Eager, of Memphis, Mo.; Mrs. Phoebe Crawford and Himan, of Howells, N.Y. and Mrs. Alice Kingsbury, of Keosauqua, Iowa. Also a bosom friend Mrs. Daizie Blackburn, whom she loved as a sister. No mother could have been more self-denial in her home and for her children than was Mrs. Miller, and none more accommodating as a neighbor. Funeral services were held from the Geo. Davis home on Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Dec. 17, conducted by Rev. G.W. Barber of Muscatine, Iowa, assisted by Rev. Jordon of Mt. Sterling. Burial was in the Center Chapel Cemetery.
