Mrs. Mary Smart Warner was born in Morgan County, Illinois, May 2, 1830. When about five years of age she came with her parents to Iowa, which was then only a territory, and settled near Bentonsport, in Van Buren County. She was married to Frederick Warner, April 3, 1851, he died in May, 1898. To this union were born Frank F., Mary Ellen (deceased), Adda M. Howard, Lora B.J. Daniels, Louisa M. Arnold, Isabella May Perkins Work, James (deceased), and Alpha Orilla Workman. There are also living, 22 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
She was one of a family of eight children, all of whom have preceded her in death except one brother, Johannan Smart, of Utica, Iowa. When only sixteen years of age she was converted and became a member of the Protestant Methodist Church, but twenty-five years ago she moved her membership to the Free Will Baptist Church, to which she remained a member throughout life. She was an ardent believer in Christ and when she fought the fight and finished the course, she kept her Faith in Him. She has wanted the end to come for some time feeling that her work was ended. She wrote a missive shortly before her death in which she expressed her gratitude that she lived to see her children grown and comfortably situated in life. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Daniel, October 3, 1916, at 1:00 a.m., at the age of 86 years, 5 months and 1 day.
