Death of Giles Pettit
Giles, oldest son of Isaiah and Angeline Pettit, was born in Keokuk, Iowa, Sept. 7, 1848, and died at his home near Mt. Sterling, Iowa, Dec. 18, 1918, at the age of 70 years, 3 months and 11 days. When eight years old, he with his parents located on a farm near Mt. Sterling and since that time resided in that community. Here, when a boy, he went to the country school and later, with many young people of his time, attended the then famed Troy Academy, after which he, for a time, was a successful teacher in the rural schools of the county. He was married to Lois R. Jones, April 9, 1871. To this union ten children were born, this happy family circle being first broken when the youngest son, Theodore, aged 16 months, died, and again when Olive Rebecca, a daughter of 19 years was called to her reward. In 1876 he united with the Christian church, under the preaching of Eld. John Shepherd and ever continued a faithful attendant and an active worker. He has been for many years an Elder in the church and taught the Men’s Bible Class continuously since the organization of the Sunday school in 1890. He was greatly interested in community and public affairs, a man true to his convictions, ready to help the right to win and fearlessly opposing the wrong. He leaves to mourn their loss the wife with whom he lived for over 47 years, four sons and four daughters. The children are: Orin T. of Dike, Iowa, Guy L. of Bloomfield, Otto C. of Bonaparte, Mrs. Alta Campbell and Mrs. Orabel Huff of Harrisburg township, Ray S., and Mrs. Artie Allen and Mrs. Iva Sparks, who reside in the home community, also nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren, three brothers and four sisters and many other relatives and friends.
