Sarah Rankin, second daughter of Gustavis and Elizabeth Ball, was born November 5, 1835, in Bellmont county, Ohio, and died at her home in Vernon township, Van Buren county, Iowa, September 18, 1919, at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 13 days. She was of a family of nine children, five of whom have preceded her in death. Those living are Mrs. James Kaiser and William F. Ball of Bellmont county, Ohio, and Mrs. Sarepta Huff of Bentonsport, Iowa.
She was united in marriage to Samuel Rankin in Bellmont county, Ohio, in March 1862. To this union were born three sons, Robert Edward, at home, James W., Bentonsport, Iowa, and Clyde who lives near the old home.
She leaves to mourn her loss, three sons, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
Her husband preceded her in death April 23, 1906. Since that time she with her oldest son continued to live on the farm where they had lived for twenty years. Mrs. Rankin lived in Bellmont county, until they came to Iowa, arriving at Bentonsport November 20, 1884 and located on a farm and two years later moved to the farm that was her home at the time of her death. She was converted and united with the M.E. church, while quite young, and alway (sic) continued to live a Christian life. Those who knew her loved her for her acts of Christian kindness, being always ready to help those in need.
Funeral services were held at the Story Chapel on Saturday, September 20, with Rev. G.H. Smith, of Mt. Sterling, preaching the sermon. Interment was in the Thompson cemetery.
